Can mumps cause serious complications?
Mumps is an acute, highly contagious viral infection characterized by painful swelling of the salivary glands such as the parotid and submandibular glands (pictured). The disease usually resolves on its own, but can also cause serious complications such as encephalitis, meningitis, gonaditis, and myocarditis.
