Hydrochlorothiazide is the most commonly prescribed thiazide diuretic indicated for the treatment of edema and hypertension. The use of hydrochlorothiazide was widespread but has since been gradually reduced, replacing ACE inhibitors or angiotensin II receptor blockers with stronger evidence of cardiovascular protection.
