For years, researchers have known that suppressing the immune system is linked to cancer. It is therefore not surprising that human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) can also cause major impairment of the immune system and is associated with increased risk of cancer. In addition to some cancers with "solid tumors," HIV is considered a risk factor for blood cancers.
