Familial dyslipidemia: What you need to know
Hyperlipidemia is now becoming common in the community and tends to progress to many cardiovascular diseases, however, most patients have not been diagnosed and treated properly. When grandparents, parents, siblings, or close relatives have hyperlipidemia, you are also at risk of hyperlipidemia. Familial hyperlipidemia (FH) is a genetic disease when the family carries gene mutations that disrupt fat metabolism, causing high blood cholesterol levels. Advances in genetic testing have helped us better understand this disease, and many genetic mutations have been identified as the cause of the disease.
