Escitalopram is used to treat depression, panic disorder, anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. This is one of a class of drugs known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). The mechanism of action of this class of drugs is by increasing the activity of some of the neurotransmitters most likely involved in depression, which are thought to be serotonin and noradrenaline.
