Cytomegalovirus infection in pregnant women
Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a herpes virus that causes infections in humans. According to a survey in the United States, about 1/3 of pregnant women infected for the first time during pregnancy will pass CMV to the fetus. If a woman was infected with CMV before pregnancy, the risk of transmitting CMV to the fetus during pregnancy is about 1%.
