The cervical nerve roots control movement and sensation in the shoulder, neck and arm areas. When the cervical nerve roots are compressed for some reason, it causes pain in the neck, shoulders and arms. In addition to causing pain, severe compression can cause sensory disturbances, motor paralysis and muscle atrophy.
