A cesarean section is a surgical procedure to deliver a baby, as an alternative to vaginal birth. In most cases of cesarean section, the mother is fully conscious throughout the procedure.

The success or failure of delivering twins or more depends on the accurate diagnosis of the fetuses' positions, the preparation of care and resuscitation equipment for the mother and fetus, and the knowledge, skills and experience of the midwife.
