Angular cheilitis is inflammation of one or both corners of the mouth. Symptoms can range from mild to severe, initially causing increased sensitivity and slight discomfort, and later causing dryness, cracking, and eventually red, swollen lesions.

Cheilitis can be an acute or chronic condition with common symptoms such as redness, dryness, cracking, scaling, itching and burning of the lips. There are many different types of cheilitis, treatment needs to be based on a diagnosis to determine the cause to have the appropriate method.

If left untreated, cheilitis can lead to complications such as squamous cell carcinoma. The complication rate is low, but it is difficult to determine the risk of disease progression, so once diagnosed with cheilitis, the patient needs to be treated immediately.
