Botulism: What you need to know (Part 2)
Botulism is caused by the toxin of Clostridium botulinum and affects the peripheral nerves. Botulism can be acquired without causing illness if the toxin is swallowed, injected, or inhaled. Symptoms include symmetrical cranial nerve palsies with bilateral weakness and flaccid paralysis without sensory disturbances. Diagnosis is clinical and laboratory testing for the toxin. Treatment is supportive and antitoxin.
