Eperisone is a muscle relaxant and a muscle tone enhancer, and is formulated as sugar-coated tablets or film-coated tablets. When prescribed to use the drug, patients need to strictly follow the doctor's instructions.

What is Eperisone? This is a muscle relaxant, working by relaxing skeletal muscles and vascular smooth muscle to reduce muscle dystonia, improve circulation, reduce pain reflexes, and help muscles move more easily.

So what does Eperisone treat? With the above effects, Eperisone is indicated in the treatment of:

  • Improving muscle spasticity in patients with cervical spondylosis, periarthritis, lumbar back pain;
  • Spastic paralysis in patients with cerebrovascular disease, cervical spondylosis, spinal cord paralysis, cerebral palsy, cerebral spinal degeneration, sequelae after surgery or trauma (spinal cord, skull), spinal cord vascular disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, other cerebrospinal diseases,...

In addition, some other uses of Eperisone are not listed on the drug label but may still be prescribed by the doctor for the patient. Patients should only use this drug to treat the disease when prescribed by a doctor.

2. Instruction for using and dosage of Eperisone

How to use: Eperisone 50mg tablets are for oral administration, taken with food or immediately after a meal.

  • Dosage for adults: An average of 150mg/day, divided into 3 doses after meals, equivalent to 3 Eperisone 50mg tablets. Dosage can be adjusted according to age and severity of symptoms;
  • Dosage for the elderly: The elderly often have impaired physiological functions, so caution should be exercised when using the drug, with appropriate measures such as reducing the dosage (under careful monitoring);
  • Dosage for children: The safety of Eperisone in children has not been established, so it is not recommended.

Dosage is determined based on the patient's health condition and response to treatment. Patients should not arbitrarily take more medication, more frequently, or stop taking the medication without the doctor's permission. If the condition does not improve or even worsen, the patient should notify the doctor immediately.  

There have been no reported cases of Eperisone overdose and there is no specific antidote in case of overdose. If you accidentally take an overdose, the patient should pay attention to their body, and if they notice any abnormalities, contact a doctor or call 115 in an emergency.

If you miss a dose, the patient should take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for the next dose, the patient can skip the missed dose and take the next dose at the scheduled time. Do not double the prescribed dose of Eperisone.

3. Side effects  Eperisone

Eperisone 50mg is considered to have a higher safety profile compared to some other muscle relaxants. Side effects of the drug are rare. However, some side effects have been reported:

  • Insomnia, drowsiness, tremor, numbness and tingling in the limbs, headache;
  • Nausea and vomiting, dry mouth, stomatitis, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, diarrhea;
  • Facial flushing, edema, sweating;
  • No urine or urinary incontinence, urinary retention, urinary disorders;  
  • Weakness, fatigue, decreased muscle strength, dizziness;
  • Increased liver enzymes;
  • Proteinuria;
  • Anemia;
  • Allergy causing itching, rash;

4. Precautions when using Eperisone

Before using Eperisone, patients should:

  • Inform your doctor if you are allergic to Eperisone or other drugs;
  • List and inform your doctor about the medications you are currently using;
  • Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant;
  • Report to your doctor immediately if you have impaired liver function.

If you are using Eperisone and experience fatigue, headache, drowsiness, ..., you should consult your doctor to reduce the dose or stop the medication, and avoid driving or operating machinery while taking the medication. If you have liver disease, you should monitor your liver function while being treated with Eperisone.

Note for pregnant or breastfeeding women:

  • There have not been enough studies to determine the risks of using Eperisone during pregnancy. Therefore, pregnant women or women who are suspected of being pregnant will be prescribed only if the benefits outweigh the potential risks;
  • Eperisone is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women. If it is necessary to use the drug, breastfeeding should be stopped until the end of treatment.

5. Drug interactions

Patients should list the medications they are currently taking and inform their doctor. Do not arbitrarily use, stop, or change the dosage of the drug. Some drug interactions of Eperisone include:

  • Avoid using Eperisone concurrently with Tolperisone HCl and Methocarbamol to reduce the risk of visual disturbances;
  • It is recommended to take the drug after meals to reduce gastrointestinal side effects, and stop drinking alcohol when using Eperisone to avoid side effects on the liver.

Eperisone should be stored at room temperature, away from moisture or direct sunlight, and out of reach of children and pets. When using the drug, patients should follow all the doctor's instructions to ensure the effectiveness of the treatment and avoid unpredictable side effects.
