Things You Need to Know About Seretide Inhaler

This article has been professionally reviewed by Dr. Nguyen Van Dinh, Head of the Respiratory – Asthma – Allergy – Clinical Immunology Unit, Vinmec Times City International General Hospital.

Seretide inhaler is commonly prescribed in the treatment of asthma in both adults and children. So, what is Seretide inhaler, and what are its effects?

1. What is Asthma?

Asthma is a chronic inflammation of the airways that increases airway responsiveness (causing bronchoconstriction, edema, and mucus secretion), leading to varying degrees of airway obstruction. Symptoms of asthma include wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and recurrent coughing, often occurring at night or early in the morning. These symptoms may resolve spontaneously or with medication.
To treat asthma, medications include bronchodilators (for acute asthma attacks) and asthma preventatives. Seretide (containing salmeterol and fluticasone propionate) is an asthma preventative medication.

2. The Importance of Using Asthma Preventative Medication

Preventative treatment provides clear benefits, helping to reduce the frequency of asthma attacks, and in some cases, patients may no longer experience asthma attacks. Without preventative treatment, each acute asthma attack may require hospitalization for several days, affecting daily activities, education, work, and carrying the risk of complications that could threaten the patient’s life.
With proper preventative treatment, patients will:

  • No longer experience asthma symptoms while at rest, and will maintain normal lung function.
  • No longer experience asthma symptoms during physical activity or sports.
  • Not wake up during sleep, and will experience reduced coughing.
  • Be able to control acute asthma attacks.
  • Minimize the side effects of asthma medications.
  • Prevent and reduce damage to the airways.
With effective preventative treatment, patients will not have asthma symptoms while at rest and will maintain normal lung function.

3. Learn About Seretide Inhaler

Seretide inhaler contains an inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) and a long-acting beta-agonist (LABA), and is used for asthma prevention. Seretide has demonstrated clinical efficacy, reducing asthma-related mortality, decreasing hospital admissions, and improving the quality of life for asthma patients. Early treatment with Seretide in patients with persistent asthma and impaired lung function can improve lung function and prevent irreversible airway obstruction.
However, Seretide is a preventative medication, meaning it cannot be used to relieve acute asthma attacks. Seretide must be used regularly, in the correct dosage as prescribed by the doctor, and with the proper inhalation technique to effectively prevent asthma symptoms.
Seretide is available in various dosages and comes with an inhaler device. Depending on the individual patient, the doctor will prescribe the appropriate dosage and regimen.
Like any other medication, Seretide may cause some side effects. Research has shown that long-term use of Seretide in patients with chronic bronchitis may increase the risk of pneumonia. Therefore, it is important to exercise caution when using this medication and strictly follow the instructions of a specialist. If any undesirable side effects occur, or if the patient has a history of allergies, they should promptly inform their doctor.
