What disease could cause a headache when shaking your head?

Question

Hello Doctor,

Two days ago, I experienced pain in the left side of my head. I took painkillers, and the pain went away. However, today, when I shook my head, I felt pain all over my skull (but it only hurts when I shake my head). Can you tell me what disease could cause a headache when shaking my head? Is this condition serious? Thank you, Doctor.

Answer

Answered by Specialist Doctor II Pham Thi Son - Department of Examination & Internal Medicine, Vinmec Hai Phong International General Hospital.

Dear,

In response to your question about "headache when shaking the head," I would like to advise you as follows:

Generally, a headache that occurs when you shake your head is not dangerous. Since you managed to alleviate the headache with medication, it is important to monitor your symptoms further. However, if the pain worsens or is accompanied by vomiting, fever, weakness in your limbs, a stiff neck, difficulty speaking, or difficulty swallowing, you should see a neurologist immediately.

If you still have questions about headaches when shaking your head, you can go to a hospital in the Vinmec Health System for further examination and consultation. Thank you for trusting us with your questions. Wishing you good health.

Best regards!
