Your mother has gallstones, elevated liver enzymes and pancreatitis. In particular, gallstones are the cause, pancreatitis is often a complication of gallstones. Stones may be in the gallbladder or there may be stones from the gallbladder that fall into the main bile duct (common bile duct stones).
The direction of treatment is laparoscopic cholecystectomy. The test that should be done immediately is an MRI of the biliary tract to assess whether there are common bile duct stones associated with gallstones. If gallstones are present, both gallstones and common bile duct stones must be treated simultaneously. Common bile duct stones can be performed by the following methods:
Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) to remove stones. Laparoscopic opening of the common bile duct to remove stones (or open surgery if necessary).
