Can children have vulvovaginitis?
Vaginal candidiasis (yeast infections) are rare in children unless they are immunocompromised or taking antibiotics. Young girls are especially susceptible to vulvitis. Because the genital area is close to the rectum, bacteria (and sometimes parasites like pinworms) spread easily. In addition, children can spread bacterial respiratory infections from their noses and mouths to their vulvas. In addition, the skin of a child's vulva is thin and susceptible to injury from abrasions, rubbing from tight clothing, or contact with irritants like harsh soaps. In this article, we will provide useful information to help caregivers promptly recognize and treat vulvitis in children.
