With a team of leading experts in internal medicine, external gastroenterology, and urology in Vietnam, equipped with modern facilities and equipment from reputable manufacturers worldwide, the Vinmec Center for Gastroenterology – Hepatobiliary – Urology routinely performs highly challenging techniques. Simultaneously, they continually adopt and master breakthrough new treatment techniques.
Advanced Professional Management – Patient-Centered: The center organizes professional management according to disease groups (service lines) and key diseases within each IPU, involving multiple specialties and offering multimodal treatment (Tumor Board) based on the latest treatment guidelines from advanced countries such as the United States and Japan. This approach ensures patients receive accurate diagnoses and can choose the most advanced and suitable treatment methods at optimal costs.
As the first hospital in Vietnam to systematically apply Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols to all surgeries according to international standards, the Vinmec Center coordinates various specialties including surgeons, anesthesiology, analgesia, rehabilitation, nutrition, and clinical pharmacology. Notably, the effective postoperative pain relief method using the erector spinae plane (ESP) block without morphine promotes quick recovery of respiratory and digestive functions, enabling early eating and physical activity, reducing hospital stays, and cutting costs significantly.
In the field of hepatobiliary gastroenterology: The Center has performed most of the major and intensive surgeries with robotic surgery and laparoscopic surgery as the focus.
- Numerous liver transplants are performed in both adults and children, particularly emergency liver transplants, achieving a high success rate and very low complication rate.
- Robotic surgery has been performed routinely since 2017 for treating stomach cancer, colon cancer, obesity, and various other gastrointestinal surgeries.
- The development of minimally invasive laparoscopic surgeries, aimed at swiftly restoring health and enhancing patients' quality of life, is a primary focus.
Currently, Vinmec has conducted over 90% of gastrointestinal surgeries using laparoscopic techniques, including complex procedures such as laparoscopic esophageal cancer surgery, extensive gastric cancer resections, total colon and rectum removals, and more.
In diagnostic imaging interventions, techniques such as hepatic artery chemical embolization and laser lithotripsy for intrahepatic and extrahepatic biliary tract stones have pioneered breakthroughs in gallstone treatment in Vietnam.
- Routine robotic surgeries include whole kidney removal, partial nephrectomy, and total prostatectomy.
- Vinmec specializes in treating urinary stones using two techniques: laparoscopic lithotripsy with a flexible tube without laser, and JJ stenting before surgery, as well as percutaneous renal lithotripsy through a small tunnel guided by ultrasound.
- Many other advanced minimally invasive techniques have been successfully applied in urological surgery at Vinmec, including laser removal of the entire prostate, total bladder resection, bladder reconstruction, and treatment of bladder cancer.
Gastroenterology - Endoscopy plays a crucial role in diagnosing and treating a wide range of gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary diseases. The interventional endoscopy unit stands out as a cornerstone, asserting its leadership in interventional endoscopy by performing numerous advanced procedures both nationally and internationally.
These include: Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) for early gastrointestinal cancers (esophageal, stomach, colorectal); laparoscopic resection of subesophageal and subgastric mucosal tumors; placement of esophageal and colon stents; laser treatment for food impaction in the stomach and intestines; laser lithotripsy for extrahepatic biliary stones using retrograde cholangiopancreatoscopy with SPY-Glass endoscope, and many other specialized techniques.
In addition to conventional medical treatments, Vinmec's Department of Gastroenterology is dedicated to advancing minimally invasive endoscopic interventions. It has emerged as one of the few comprehensive centers capable of performing complex endoscopic procedures for treating hepatobiliary and gastrointestinal diseases.
Endoscopic removal of early esophageal, stomach, and colorectal cancers using ESD techniques.
Removal of submucosal tumors smaller than 2cm in the esophagus, stomach, duodenum, and colorectal using ESD or submucosal tunneling techniques.
Placement of gastrointestinal stents to treat lesions or fistulas in the gastrointestinal tract.
Biliary endoscopy interventions: In addition to routine ERCP techniques, Vinmec is one of the very few hospitals in Vietnam that has successfully applied retrograde cholangiopancreatoscopy with an endoscope to treat large biliary tract stones.
Gastrointestinal Surgery
Gastrointestinal includes: esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon, anal-rectum, and some pathologies of the diaphragm, abdominal wall and pelvic floor.
Hepatobiliary includes: Surgery to treat diseases of the liver, biliary tract, gallbladder, spleen, pancreas.
Emergency surgery: The department is on duty 24/7 to respond to pathological and trauma emergencies
Urology includes: treatment of urinary system stones, treatment of renal and urinary tract tumors, plastic surgery in urology, urethral pathologies, vascular intervention, andrology, kidney transplant
