Is a nuchal translucency measurement of 1.2mm after 12 weeks of pregnancy a concern?

Question

Hello Doctor,

I am 15 weeks pregnant and had a nuchal translucency measurement of 1.2mm at 12 weeks and 5 days. I would like to ask the doctor whether a nuchal translucency of 1.2mm after 12 weeks is concerning. On the consult day, I forgot to ask the doctor what the results for Trisomy 21 and Trisomy 18 mean. I would appreciate your advice, thank you, doctor.

Hello,

Regarding the question "Is a nuchal translucency measurement of 1.2mm after 12 weeks of pregnancy a concern?", the doctor answers as follows:

Nuchal translucency (NT), also known as the nuchal fold, is the accumulation of fluid under the skin at the back of the fetus's neck. All fetuses between 11 and 14 weeks of gestation have this fluid accumulation at the nape. Measuring the NT by ultrasound helps doctors diagnose the earliest risk of Down syndrome, thereby advising whether the mother needs additional prenatal screening tests such as NIPT or other tests.

A NT measurement of 1.2mm at 12 weeks and 5 days is within the normal range; however, at that time, you should combine it with other screening tests such as the Double test or the more advanced NIPT, which will tell you if you are at risk for chromosomal disorders 13, 18, 21, etc. If you have already done the Double test, you should have the results now. If you still do not understand the results, you should return to your obstetrician, who will explain them clearly to you.

If you have any further questions about the NT measurement at over 12 weeks being 1.2mm, you can visit a hospital in the Vinmec Health System for further examination and consultation. Thank you for trusting and sending your question to Vinmec. Wishing you good health.
