Drotaverine, the active ingredient in No Spa, reduces pain from smooth muscle spasms in the liver, gallbladder, and intestines. It also treats pain from gastrointestinal disorders and gynecological inflammation, among other conditions. So what is the effect of Nospa?
1. Indications:
No-spa contains the active component Drotaverine Hydrochloride.
The medication is available in two forms: tablets (NoAspa 40 mg) and injectable solution (No-spa 40 mg/2 ml).
No-spa is indicated in:
- Smooth muscle spasms in biliary tract disorders: gallstones, bile duct stones, cholecystitis, pericholecystitis, cholangitis.
- Spasms of smooth muscle in urinary tract disorders: nephrolithiasis, ureterolithiasis, pyelonephritis, cystitis
Utilized as adjunctive therapy:- Spasms of smooth muscle in the digestive tract: gastric-duodenal ulcers, gastritis, pyloric spasms, enteritis, colitis
- Gynecological disorders: Dysmenorrhea
2. Instructions for utilizing Nospa:
The dose will depend on the age and health of the patient.
No-spa 40 mg oral tablets:
- For adults: The advised dosage is 120-240 mg (i.e., 3-6 tablets) daily, administered in 2-3 split doses.
- For children: The efficacy of Drotaverine in pediatric populations has not been validated by clinical research. In case of having to use Drotaverine:
- For children aged 6 to 12 years, the maximum daily dosage is 80 mg ( 2 tablets per day), administered in two divided doses.
- For children aged over 12 years: the maximum daily dosage is 160 mg (4 tablets per day), administered in 2 to 4 divided doses daily.
- No data exists for children under six years of age.
No-Spa 40 mg/2 ml - injectable solution: The medication is administered solely by healthcare professionals.
- For adults: The advised dosage is 40-240 mg per day, administered in 1-3 intramuscular injections. The intravenous dosage for treating acute angina caused by calculi is 40-80 mg
- For children: No clinical trials have been performed on this demographic.
3. Contraindications
Do not use No-spa in the following situations:
- Hypersensitivity to Drotaverine or any component of the medicine
- Severe liver/kidney failure and cardiac failure
- Furthermore, avoid prescribing sodium metabisulfite injections to patients who are sensitive to it.
4. Adverse Effects
No-spa can induce the following unpleasant side effects:
- Neurological symptoms: Headache, dizziness, and insomnia.
- Cardiovascular system diseases include palpitations and hypotension.
- Immune system problems include allergic reactions (angioedema, urticaria, rash, and itching).
- Gastrointestinal disorders (for tablets): nausea and constipation.
- Injection site reactions
Some adverse effects are uncommon but can have major implications. Patients should notify their doctor or pharmacist of any adverse effects they experience while taking the medicine, particularly those not included in the drug instructions.
5. Warnings and Precautions
- Exercise caution when administering the drug if you have hypotension or are pregnant.
- No-spa is not recommended for breastfeeding women.
- With the No-spa 40 mg tablets: There is insufficient data to prove the safety of children under the age of six. The medication contains lactose. Patients with uncommon inherited diseases, such as galactose intolerance, lactase enzyme deficiency, or glucose-galactose malabsorption, should not use this medicine.
- With injections: There have been no clinical trials undertaken on children. To avoid fainting, patients must lie down during intravenous injections.
- When taking this medication at the recommended dose, particularly intravenously, patients should avoid potentially hazardous activities such as driving, operating machinery, or doing comparable tasks.
6. Interactions
- Phosphodiesterase inhibitors, such as papaverine, diminish levodopa's antiparkinsonian action. When this medication is used with levodopa, the antiparkinsonian impact is diminished, and symptoms of muscle stiffness and tremor may worsen.
- Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are currently taking, have recently taken, or plan to take any other medications, including those purchased without a prescription
7. How to Store No Spa
- The medicine should be stored in a dry place, away from light (in its original packaging), and at a temperature not exceeding 30 degrees Celsius.
- Do not use the medicine after the expiry date listed on the packaging.
- Do not throw away the medicine in wastewater or household waste. Inquire with your pharmacist about how to properly dispose of unused medications.
