Lindau and collaborator Natalia Gavrilova focused on two large studies. The first was the National Study of Middle-Age Living, involving 3,000 people aged 25 to 74, completed in 1996. The second was the National Health and Aging Project, which was funded by the National Institutes of Health. survey by 3,000 others aged 57 to 85, completed in 2006. Participants provided information on marital status, quality of sex life and frequency of intercourse. They were also assessed on their general health status on the following scales: poor, moderate, good, very good or excellent.
The results show that men have more desires and a richer sex life than women. This difference is most evident in the 75 to 85 age group, about 40% for men and about 17% for women.

The study also introduces a new health measure, which is "Sexually Active Life Expectancy" (SALE) for short, the average length of sex life. For men, the SALE index is usually 10 years less than life expectancy.
For example, men at the age of 30, sex life lasts until about 35 more years and their life expectancy can add up to 45 years, including the last 10 years of not having sex. So, predictably, the percentage of men this age who maintain a sex life is up to 78%.
