Can leg paralysis due to transverse myelitis be treated with plasmapheresis?

Question
Hello doctor,
I have had transverse myelitis for 3 years. Paralyzed, lost both legs, only feeling very weak. I want to treat the disease with plasma dialysis. So the doctor asked me if my leg paralysis due to transverse myelitis can be treated with plasmapheresis? I thank you doctor.

Answer
Hello,
To the question “Can paralysis of the legs due to transverse myelitis be treated with plasmapheresis?” The doctor would like to answer as follows:
Plasmapheresis is usually only used in acute exacerbations of myelitis. Your current symptoms are sequelae of myelitis 3 years ago, so there is no indication for hemodialysis. You should see a neurologist for a long-term treatment plan (if indicated) and do daily physical therapy to avoid complications of paraplegia.
If you still have questions about the problem of leg paralysis due to transverse myelitis, you can go to the hospital of Vinmec Health System for examination and advice. Thank you for trusting and sending questions to Vinmec. Wishing you lots of health.
Best regards!
