Arthritis is a condition in which the joints become inflamed. The two most common types are osteoarthritis (also known as degenerative joint disease) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Osteoarthritis can occur as a result of aging, or after other injuries to the joints. RA is an autoimmune disease that usually occurs in young people, in which the body's defenses attack the lining of the joints.
