Melioidosis, also known as Whitmore’s disease or “Vietnam Time Bomb,” is caused by the bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei. The bacteria are found in soil and water in tropical regions, especially Southeast Asia and northern Australia. Humans and other animals become infected through exposure to the bacteria in the environment.
