Colon volvulus is a common, obstructive, ischemic disease that can lead to necrosis and perforation of the colon. The twist can be up to about 180 - 540 degrees. Colon volvulus causes local intestinal distention, as peristalsis pushes stool and air to the volvulus, causing increased pressure.

Colon volvulus is a dangerous disease if not diagnosed and treated promptly. This disease is most common with sigmoid volvulus and caecum volvulus. Obstruction of digestive juices and blood flow to the intestinal wall is characteristic of volvulus.
