Associate Professor, PhD, Dr. Mikael Hartman currently practices medicine in Singapore, where he holds pivotal roles within the nation's Breast Cancer Program. Trained at the prestigious Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, Dr. Hartman earned his certification in general surgery in 2005, followed by a specialization in trauma surgery. After completing his doctoral program in epidemiology in 2007, he focused his expertise on breast cancer prognosis and cancer prognostic genetics.
With 27 years of experience in the field of cancer prevention, he dedicates himself to alleviating the burden of breast cancer and transforming the lives of those affected by it As a highly esteemed breast surgery expert in Singapore, Dr. Hartman has provided critical guidance on the early detection and prevention of breast cancer. He advocates for a proactive approach, stressing the importance of a healthy lifestyle to lower disease risk, regular breast examinations at specialized medical facilities, and timely mammograms for those in high-risk groups.
In 2014, Dr. Hartman undertook a remarkable journey from Singapore to Sweden by motorbike to raise awareness about breast cancer and its research. Dr. Hartman has been honored with numerous prestigious awards, including the NMRC Clinical Scientist Award (Singapore) in 2013 and 2017, the 2017 Digital Mammography DREAM Challenge Award, and the Special Recognition Award from the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore, in both 2015 and 2017. He also received the Swedish Business Association Singapore (SBAS) Recognition Award in 2014.
Currently, Dr. Hartman serves as Deputy Head of the Breast Department and Head of General Surgery at the Department of Surgery, National University Hospital, Singapore. He also leads the Breast Cancer Prevention Program at the Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health and holds the position of Deputy Dean (Research) at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore. Additionally, he is the Deputy Director of the Office of Research at the National University Health System.
In Vietnam, Dr. Hartman holds key roles as Vice Chairman of the Cancer Council and Director of the Breast Cancer Program at Vinmec Health System.
