Evaluation of Nursing Care for Patients Undergoing Radiation Therapy for Head and Neck Cancer at the Radiotherapy Department, Vinmec Times City Hospital

Abstract

Goal: To evaluate nursing care for patients receiving radiotherapy for head and neck cancer at the Radiation Therapy Center of Vinmec Times City Hospital.

Subjects and research methods: 36 patients treated with head and neck radiotherapy at the Vinmec Times City Hospital Radiotherapy Center from November 2017 to July 2019. The research method was prospective, descriptive, and cross-sectional.

Results: The incidence of head and neck cancer in men was 60.7%. The number of patients in the working age group from 18 to 60 years old was 72.2%. Up to 100% of patients in this study had radiation dermatitis (including 13.8% of severe dermatitis). 94% of the 36 patients had oral mucositis. No patient had severe pain during treatment.

Evaluation of nursing care at the Radiation Therapy Department of Vinmec Times City Hospital:

  • 100% of patients treated at the Radiation Therapy Center of Vinmec Times City Hospital were assessed for pain using the VAS scale and same as meta description.
  • The level of moderate and severe pain in patients decreased from 61.1% to 5.5% after receiving nursing care.
  • The level of very satisfied and satisfied patients with nursing care at the Radiation Therapy Center of Vinmec Times City Hospital was 96%.

Conclusion: Nursing care is extremely important in improving the quality of life of patients with head and neck cancer radiotherapy, increasing treatment effectiveness, and helping patients feel secure and cooperate during the treatment process.
